Beauty - My relationship with my natural hair

I'm so happy to see so many women convert back to their natural hair. I was first inspired to go natural back in the 90's when the singing group Zhane came out. I was amazed at how beautiful those ladies were and they were "bald headed" and I loved it!!! They offered me a look I had not seen many women in Texas rock and I wanted that for myself.

Back track to my childhood...I wanted long hair like my middle sister and cousins...but it never happened. My hair never grew long and every 3 years like clockwork it would all fall out. The old folks said I had a "nerve problem" and that was causing my hair to fall out. My grandma was superstitious and she would cut my hair only on the Full Moon or New Moon( I don't remember which one). I hated everything about my hair when I was younger, but like everything else, time helped me to appreciate what I had once I gotten older and I was able to pay to get my hair done during my Senior year in high school. Things would begin to change for me and my hair....

I joined the Army in 1995 and and before I left for basic training, I cut off all my hair. It is not required, but I wanted to make my life as easy as possible. I loved rocking my "boy cut" because it was so me...so different. During basic training and AIT I cut my own hair and keep with the upkeep myself. I would place my guard on my clippers and just cut. For me there was no right or wrong...I just made sure I didn't have any patches in my head...that would not have been a good look. From 1995 until now I have rock my natural hair off and on. I have had low cuts, locs, and most recently I have been rocking the twist outs( which I absolutely love). However, I must say my favorite hairstyle to rock is the low cuts. I had waves for days and I would color it a brown as well....maaaan, you couldn't tell me shit, lol. I relieved so may compliments on my hair when I rocked it like that. I also have a cute shaped hear, that helps me pull it off, so that's a plus. Now, with rocking the low cuts comes some ignorant comments, but I didn't allow them to bother me because I was going to wear MY hair how I wanted to...as we all should do.

I have been on this natural hair journey long before it became popular, but I'm so glad it did catch on. I have a Love/Hate relationship with my natural hair like most natural's, but this has been the best decisions I have ever made for me and my hair. I challenge all women who have never seen their natural hair texture, to give it a try. Some women have had relaxers since elementary school and have no clue what their own hair looks like. If you want to do it, I say go for it!!!! At least once in your adult life, you may be surprised with what you see, and if you don't like it after a year, return to a relaxer. Don't be afraid to experiment with your hair because at the end of the day that's all it is....JUST HAIR. Hopefully some of you ladies will take that leap and begin to transition from relaxed to natural....Stay Fabulous and do what makes you happy, Natural or Not.
