Talk Tuesday - Being Mary Jane

Where do I start.... Tonight was the season finale to one of the best shows EVER to air on BET, Being Mary Jane. This show resonates with people on so many levels. It's raw straight up truth that we don't like to deal with in our own lives, but we are more than willing to watch it play out on television.

Mary Jane is a woman that many can relate to on so many different levels.  She is a successful career woman who seems to have it together on the outside, but has flaws like the rest of us. She finds herself falling for a married man, Andre, who omitted the fact he was married AND when she did find out, she finds it hard to break it off with him.  Then there is David....A sometimes off and on again love that she is getting to get over.  MJ is a women who is in the prime of her life and she to is trying her best to get it right.  But what exactly is right? Why do we depend on everyone's definition of happiness instead of going with what makes us happy? As women we are made to feel that being a wife and mother is the ultimate goal in life.... but what about the women that don't want that life? Why do we let others define what makes us happy? We've all had that one family member ask us,  "When are you going to get married and have kids", as if that's the only option in life.  But that doesn't have to be your life if you don't want it to be.  We live for our OWN happiness and not the happiness of what others expect of us.

I belive MJ has a mother complex as in she wants to save everyone.  She is the "successful" one out of her siblings and I didn't find that she threw that up in their faces, but she wanted to know when they were going to get their shit together. More normal people issues. We've all had experience with a relative who couldn't get it together. I personally loved how she didn't sugarcoat her feelings with her family and how she felt they were handling issues in their lives. I completely relate to that, because I'm EXACTLY the same way.  I tell it like it is and sometimes feelings get hurt along the way, but I will take truth over bullshit anyday. However, knowing that you have someone that loves you enough to tell you the truth, even if you don't want to hear it is priceless.

Being Mary Jane may not be based on truth, but it has some truth in it. At the end of the day it is a television show that gets us to thinking about real topics. I truly enjoyed watching Being Mary Jane every Tuesday and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for her. This time around I have a message for Black America... THIS IS JUST A SHOW. Learn to appreciate it for what it is and that's entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. Hats off to the people of BET for allowing this show and the creator to have a platform to tell a story that we can relate to, even if we don't want to admit it. Please don't keep us waiting long BET... You have a hit on your hands and you don't want MJ`s Brigade filling your news feeds with requests and threats... O_o.  Until next time.... we will be Fabulously waiting.
