Wellness Wednesday - Staying Focused

Image
Hey loves!!! Coming in with a quick check in to let you know how I'm doing. For the month of May I'm trying the Pescatarian Diet. So far so good.... The Pescatarian diet is very similar to a Vegetarian diet except you fish or seafood. If you like you can include dairy and eggs. I have chosen to include them in my diet. This is a great diet for me because I LOVE seafood, but the real objective is to eat more vegetables. I have been eating more veggies and one of meals a day contains seafood. This has really motivated me to stay consistent in watching what I eat and portion control. If your looking for a way to jump start the change to living a healthy lifestyle,  I highly recommend this one. Until next time...Stay Fabulous!!!

Wellness Wednesday - My weight loss testimony.

When I stepped on the scale this morning,  it said 248.2lb. It's heading back in the right direction and that's a plus. Keep pushing!!! With that being said, I want to share my testimony.... I want to share my struggle with my weight loss journey.  I know when most of you see me, you see this outgoing person, and for the most part I am. However there are days when I can't stand the way I look because of all this extra weight I have  carried around for almost 12yrs. I have my struggles especially when it's time to try on clothes...it's something about that damn dressing room mirror, I swear it's the devil, lol. I have my pity party and I get a little discouraged...but then I remind myself you can do this!!! Starting in January I became determined to lose 80-100lbs. I know that sounds drastic,  but most of you don't know how much I weighted when I started this journey. In January I weighted 256lbs...I was in shock!!! I have never been this heavy in my life. Hair - Nijah does a Big Chop

Image
Several weeks ago my daughter and I decided to cut off her hair. There was a lot of persuasion on my part, so I had to act quickly before she changed her mind. This is not her first big chop...her first one was in 2008. She was natural up until she went to live with her father the summer of 2012.   A month has passed since her hair was cut and she is loving it. I want her to enjoy this experience and understand that her hair is beautiful in its natural state and relaxers are not always the answer. To help her enjoy this experience, we are going to blog together. I think the 2nd and last Thursday of each month will be our days to bond over hair and anything else mother and daughters talk about...but mostly it will be about hair. I will let her write about he experience and how she personally feels about having natural hair. So follow us on this mother/daughter adventure. Hopefully we can be encouraging to other mother and daughters who may have thought about going natural,...

Wellness Wednesday - How many more to go?!?!

This past month I've struggled to do any type of exercise or stick to my healthy eating habits. I knew before I stepped on the scale this morning, I was going to pay. The scales read 249.9lbs which was up from 246.3lbs...back up 3.3lbs. Not the downward trend I'm going for. This is to be expected because I started eating at McDonald's every morning.....not a good look. I have no one to be upset with except myself. I was eating any and every thing because I love food. And when it comes to food, the better it tastes...the more I want. Believe it or not, soda and sweet tea are my biggest culprits.. How do I expect to lose weight if I don't control what goes into my mouth? So, its the end of the month and I have started my "detox". No meat, breads, dairy, or sweets. I will eat fruits and veggies. I put it in my head, That I can and will do this. I would normally challenge myself to a 10 day detox, but I never stuck to it. I find 7 is my perfect number, and giving ...

Talk Tuesday - Dreams forgotten...Creativity gone.

The other day I was thinking about all the dreams I had as a child and teenager. I did so many things. In elementary school I would write short stories and tell them to my mama. In junior high, I was into art, calligraphy, and science.  In high school I was on the dance team, did nails, and hair. As I look back on all those things I have once done, I realize I was a very creative child. What has happened along the way for me to allow my creativity to get lost...as adulthood took over.  That is the issue for most living in this crazy world. When adulthood kicks in we feel that it's time to put the "childish" things away and focus on landing that "perfect" job or career. BUT....what if those childish things bring you complete happiness and they are all you can dream and think about? Why are most people willing to stifle their creativity instead of honing in on the one thing that brings them happiness? One of my life long dreams is to become an entrepreneur and I...

Wellness Wednseday - Couch to 5K

I stepped on the scale this morning and I am happy to announce that I am down to 246.3lbs. That's a total of 8.1lbs since December. I will start my WalkB4URun training which is Black Girls Run version of Couch25K. If you are interested in participating in a BGR event, please check out them out here . It's been a while since I have been able to run consistently for over 2 miles and the training plan is designed to get me there. I'm still walking at work during my breaks and this week I have included 2lb weights for each hand. I am also doing my monthly detox, however, I have not been as consistent as I should be. I cheated on Monday and today, but I will get back on track tomorrow until the 31st. I have decided that I would like to weigh 200lbs by the first day of my trip to St. Martin for my 40th birthday. I have until June 21 to get there. By incorporating the WBUR training and a healthy, consistent diet, I can get there. What are your fitness goals to a healthier, lighte...

Talk Tuesday - When did being a black woman stop being good enough.

The other day I was driving and this thought popped into my mind....When did being a Black Woman stop being good enough? I feel this is a very valid question because the black youth need to know they are enough,  ESPECIALLY the black girls. I love hip hop and rap mucis, but they are guilty of perpetuating what is considered to be the beautiful. You hear it in the songs..."I don't want her unless she looks exotic"....or "I want a bad yella bone". The list goes on on and on. Being from the south, I'm familiar with the whole terminology when it comes to the different skin colors in the black community.  "Light skin" vs "Dark skin" had always been an issue in the black community,  but it's certainly not exclusive to us.  However, I feel that we celebrate skin color for all the wrong reasons. When I was younger I was guilty of saying ignorant stuff, because that's what I was "taught". And when I say taught, I'm saying tha...
